The Startup Hats is a street-smart, practical and entertaining guide to starting your company. It provides entrepreneurs with both the skills and attitude necessary to grow their ventures. In this book David lays out a concise overview of each role every entrepreneur must master – from banker to salesman to manager. Unlike most professions that require that you master only one role, successful entrepreneurship dictates that you embrace multiple roles on a daily basis. The ability to mentally switch between these roles is the secret to ensuring your startup will survive and thrive. Depending on your strengths and personality, you will gravitate towards some roles more than others but ignore any one of them at your peril. This is a must-read for aspiring, new and even seasoned entrepreneurs. What People Are Saying about Startup Hats "Practical and entertaining, David states an important principle and then makes it memorable with real examples from his own life as an entrepreneur, advisor and investor…a must-read." – Jon Kraft, co-founder Pandora Radio® "I’ve worked with David and watched him do his magic with entrepreneurs. David Gardner has put together a terrific guidebook for new and experienced entrepreneurs considering starting a new business and those who want to be leaders in their own business of whatever type. Jeff Bezos has his 14 Leadership Principles, and David Gardner has his 11 Startup Hats, and both lists are all about leadership in developing a new product or business. As I studied his descriptions of all the considerations that go into being the leader of a business team, I always thought of examples from my own career or from working with startups that directly related to what he was saying. The book is very well written, easy to read, and gets to the point quickly on a wide variety of topics that every business leader should understand. I recommend the paperback version, as I am sure you will want to keep it handy, pull it out when you need it, and flip through to the highlighted and soon to be dog-eared parts that are the most helpful to you. And get a box of them to pass out to your team too, so they will understand their part of the teamwork and processes advocated by David. Excellent work and full of useful insights from David's lifetime of being a successful entrepreneur.

The Startup Hats Master the Many Roles of the Entrepreneur David Gardner 9780692313121 Books Reviews

As a fellow entrepreneur that has bootstrapped, built, and exited a company, I found that reading David Gardner's "The Startup Hats" brought back many memories, elicited frequent chuckles, and left me subconsciously nodding in agreement with his anecdotes and advice. He takes what could be the less sexy side of entrepreneurship (the many things an entrepreneur must actually do to succeed) and boils them down to their essence, while livening them up with a folksy style of writing and entertaining stories. Although he focuses mainly on his area of expertise, BTB software, I found that the advice was closely correlated to what I would have given somebody starting a company in my completely different industry. The metaphor of the multiple "hats" one must wear works well to summarize his advice into useful categories. Perhaps, his most useful advice (at least after determining if you really want to be an entrepreneur) is on knowing when to take some of the hats off - a key for any enterprise to move beyond those heady early days and become a functional ongoing entity.

A very enjoyable read - and one I wish had existed when our company started so that I could have avoided learning at least a few of the discussed mistakes from experience. Entrepreneurs by nature don't have time to read the entire Owner's Manual and learn every feature - so think of this as the Getting Started Quickly Guide that gets you up to speed on the key things you need to know before pushing the Power button!
There are lots of startup books out there, how-tos and other misc. advice, but rarely do you find this enlightening mix of real world experience in both success and failure as a means to provide battle hardened advice. The combination ends up working out really well in this book. Interesting anecdotes with loads of lessons to be learned. It reads like you're having a special one on one meeting with a very experienced person. An opportunity you don't want to miss.
The hats perspective is a different way of approaching the topic of entrepreneurship and startups. Even the organization of the book is interesting and provides food for thought in itself. People give lip service to having to wear different hats in a startup, but real examples given in this book make the advice more concrete.
Its reminiscent of Founders at Work (Jessica Livingston) but with a mix that contains more advice and lighter on the stories and yet more personal.
Overall, an excellent addition to the set of startup essential books such as the Lean Startup (Eric Ries), Four Steps to the Epiphany (Steve Blank), The Dip (Seth Godin), Business Model Generation, etc.
1. What is it First off, this is not the Motley Fool David Gardner, this is written from the point of view of start-up guy who invests his time and money, and seems to have many practical experiences and anecdotes to share related to the hats won in a start-up.

2. The Bad Of the many things that are great about this book, I could have used a chart with a comparison of roles for the hats. There's some useful content at the beginning of the book on estimating and start-up philosophy, but a tool or graphic to describe the many relationships and interconnections that are later listed in the book would be great. You can still get this from reading the book, however. The bad is obviously not that bad.

3. The Awesome Favorite quote, and forgive the length, but this lends to the level of detail about the roles(hats) he describes as well as well as how his advice is given.

"If you are not contributing as a coder, you will feel rather helpless waiting for the features you need in order to start producing revenue. It will be difficult, but I encourage you to always accept the estimates provided by your CTO without question. Never use those early estimates to criticize him or her or their development team. The features on the high level roadmap are not well defined and once they are defined in a specification document, the amount of time necessary to deliver them can vary dramatically."

It's spot on for anyone on either side of the coder's wall.

4. Still more Good Favorite section would actually be the Negotiator's hat, it's a skill I feel uncomfortable in, but I understand the value of. David spells out requirements for the role well and while one of the shorter sections of the book it delivers good advice to people who might feel more comfortable with Susan Cain's Quiet book. http//www./Quiet-Power-Introverts-World-Talking/dp/0307352153/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1416852568&sr=8-1&keywords=quiet+the+power+of+introverts

Match what she says to David's analysis of what you need, and perhaps you can finally solve the requirements of having extroverts and introverts sharing hats in a start up that so many of us have had to overcome piece by piece.

5. Conclusion Other than a few small editing mistakes here and there, this is an incredibly solid book that delivers
